Build-in camera (2-3-2004)
Entered the next phase: made my first jump with the
bullet-cam
and the rest of the new equipment. After some searching around on
the internet I found the cheapest place in the Netherlands to buy a
TRV33 (see pick2pay.nl)
Then I went searching for a camera-case that would also hold the
re-chargable battery-pack (good for 10 hours of jumping...). And
together with a bunch of plugs and wire, the better-half of CaTo :-)
together with Case made the following setup:

in more detail the camera-case that I wear on my stomach:

and the inside of the bag:

What I did was: I
cut the wire of the bullet-cam just long enough to have the wire coming
out of the helmet, and a male plug is attached to that end. A second
wire is made which is installed and stiched into my jumpsuit, female at
the neck part, male at the belly-part. The plug down on my stomach
leaves the suit via a hole hole made in my jumpsuit. The cameracase is
strapped seperatly around my stomach, so under my rig.
Both trv33 and battery are connected with the other end of the original
wire (which I've cut before, see above) and a female plug at the end
that was cut, coming out of the bag.
(note that themale-female setup is important, since there is voltage on
the wire...)
I use a cam-eye sport, that is attached on the bag.

As you could have read below, I have bought a new bullet camera to get
some weight of my head.
The next thing I had to figure out was: how will I attach the camera on
my helmet? First thoughts were to put it on top, like the guy from
monkey-cam did:

but I must say: that looks rather silly: such a large helmet with that
small camera on top...
An since I also wanted to protect the videocamera very good, the
alternative was... to put it inside, so switch places between fotocam
and videocam. And this is what it looks like:

don't be fooled with the hole in the middle (I still have to fix that)
but take a look at the left corner: that's the camera :-)
Now, the next challange is to make a release-proof connection at the
back of the helmet for the cable that will be attached to the camera
attached to my belly. I will keep you informed!
By the way, as you can see, I am still using my Nikon 801. I did look
at the Canon EOS 300D, but since I will be needing also a new lens,
15mm, I will not only have to invest again a load of money, but more
important: total weight of the Canon is only 100 grams less than the
good-old Nikon... so I will stick to making slides!
Camera-news
After diagnosed with a hernia (see below) I thought of ways to return
to the sky, and especially with
a camera on my head. Now, using my old equipment

was
not an option, being almost 4 kilo's on top of my head. So I did take a
look around the internet for light-weight camera's, with comparable
quality. And I found the compagny rfconcepts
in Ireland. They sell bullet camera's with a Sony CCD in it, and the 21CWSHR
camera looked like the best option. Yesterday I received the package,
and although I knew the size from paper, it was still a surprise to see
how truly tiny the camera is. See here:

Now compare this with the TRV6 I am used to wearing on my head:

This page will keep you updated on the next steps:
- choosing a recorder to wear on my
belly with analogue-in (e.g. TRV 33)
- attaching
the camera to my helmet
- connecting
the camera with the recorder
Neck status

MADE MY FIST JUMP!! ok, i did not wait until march the first, but since
this is a leap year I thought... what the hack...
Waether was good, although terrible cold, but the first jump was again
that lovely feeling :-)
no neck problems, not even muscle pain the next morning. I also tested
the new bulletcam, and that went ok also, so I am ready for this year!
January 8th 2004
All is going well, no more pain, no tingling in my left hand and I can
move my head, neck and arm normally. So I am confident that I will jump
again, but maybe it's better not to use the old and heavy camera's.....
see above for my alternative.
March seems still a good month to start again :-)
December 2nd 2003
During one of the Dutch-records jumps on 19th of
October 2003, I managed to end up in a major twist after opening.
Because I wanted to prevent flying into the formation (I could not see
since by head was pushed forward) I used all my force to push my head
back, through the twist.... Apparently this was too much for my neck,
and I ended up with real pain and numbness in my arm and thumb.
After completing all jumps (AND filming the record :-) I decided
it was time for a rest... and visit to the doctor.
After an MRI I was diagnosed with a neck hernia in C5-C6 .....
Since then, the healing process is faster than any docter
expected. Although I am careful and not jumping yet, physiotherapy is
helping me strengthen my neck, and I am confident that I will return in
the air next year.
I will have to change my equipment, make it lighter but I'm even
looking forward to that: finally a good reason to buy that supersonic
camera :-)
